Nutrilite Protein / Meal Replacement Shake Review
June 30, 2009 by nctrower
I have had many requests for a Nutrilite product review. I really love quite a few of their products. My top 3 favorites are the Nutrilite Protein Shake, Nutrilite Protein Powder, and Nutrilite Meal Replacement Shake. All of the products have incredible flavor and I am super picky and selective when it comes to my taste buds.
From everyday power walkers to elite athletes, Nutrilite has products for every fitness level and every fitness need, including energy, strength, hydration, recovery, and daily nutrition.
NUTRILITE Protein Shakes help you maintain lean body mass, with 25 grams of satiating protein your body uses to build and rebuild muscle tissue after a strength-training workout. For optimal results, consume within 30 minutes of exercise. Also great as pre-workout for early morning workouts.
These are my favorite ready made protein shakes. I’ve tried Lean Body Protein Shakes, Oh Yeah! Protein Shakes and Muscle Milk Protein Shakes. NUTRILITE Protein Shakes surpass them all in taste. You can view the nutritional information by clicking the image below.
NUTRILITE Protein Powder provides a natural, low fat protein with the added benefits of naturally occurring soy isoflavones, calcium and iron. It also provides balanced amounts of the nine essential and eleven non-essential amino acids.
NUTRILITE Protein Powder is…
* A nutritious alternative to meats and dairy products – one serving provides 10 g of protein. (8 g protein from soy) .
* Low in calories – only 45 calories per serving.
* Unflavored, neutral tasting – ideal to add to your favorite foods and drinks.
* Certified Kosher and Halal.
NUTRILITE® Meal Replacement Shakes in French Vanilla flavor help you control calories and portions, with plenty of protein and essential nutrients. And they’re ready to go when you are, with just 140 calories each! Nutrition you’ll love when there’s no time to dine! This simple, drinkable meal is healthy, satisfying, and delicious.
The only downside to these is that the containers are small and 140 calories each. If I want these as a meal replacement, then I have to drink 2 of them. It would be great if these came in a size that is a true meal replacement calorie wise.
Other than that, the taste is more outstanding than a few meal replacement shakes that I have tried. Stay tuned for my next few posts as I will have reviews on Prograde Recovery and Meal Replacement Shakes and Beach Body Shakeology!

Top Vitamins for Women Revealed
June 19, 2009 by nctrower
Filed under Dietary Supplements, Jumpstart Your Metabolism
Ok, so you know Vitamins and Minerals are important. Most every woman knows that.
However, not everyone understands WHY they are so important for their body. I recently read an article from registered dietitian Jayson Hunter that gives us the rundown on the Top Women’s Vitamins. Here’s what he had to say:
Vitamin A – This vitamin contributes to the health of your eyes, skin and nails.
Vitamim B – While B Vitamins are often referred to as “energy vitamins” they don’t actually give you a surge of energy, per se. What they actually do is help facilitate metabolic reaction in the body to create energy. They’re also necessary for a healthy metabolism.
Vitamin C – This women’s vitamin is a great antioxidant and immune system booster. It also helps skin health.
Vitamin D – Helps women absorb calcium. And it may help prevent certain types of cancer.
Calcium – It’s actually a mineral not a vitamin. And as most women know already, it improves bone density.
Pretty simple, right? But you can also see why it’s so important to understand vitamins for women. When we understand the reasons to make healthier choices, it helps us to make them.
Now, I get asked all the time by women which vitamin supplements, if any, they need to be taking. Great question.
Well, if your nutrition is 100% perfect all the time then you probably don’t need to take any.
But that’s not the case for most women. Most women are just like me and are busy as heck and don’t always find the time for proper nutrition 100% of the time.
So if that’s the case with you, I highly recommend taking a Whole Foods based Multi-Vitamin, Prograde Nutrition’s VGF 25+ for Women. I have noticed a drastic difference in my energy levels over the past 6 months.
My fitness trainer endorses these vitamins as well as many other fitness professionals and dietitians.
It’s actually really cool because it’s literally made from 25 veggies, greens and fruits. You should definitely check out Prograde’s Women’s Vitamins. You can view the list of ingredients at the top of the page which shows 25 whole foods they use to make VGF 25+ for Women.
Guys, I don’t mean to leave you out of the picture. Prograde’s Men’s Vitamins are a great source for you too. Pretty cool, huh? The nutrition of 25 whole foods in a bottle! Have you taken your vitamin today?

7 Kid Friendly Healthy Snack Ideas
June 15, 2009 by nctrower
Filed under Healthy Snack Ideas, Jumpstart Your Metabolism
I have noticed that I have a separate grocery list for me for certain items since I have had more of a focus on my nutrition. My kids need a nutrition remodel as well. It was a fun weekend of getting them involved with picking out more healthier foods for their lunches and after school/summer camp snacks. Here is the list that we bought for healthy kid snack ideas:
7 Kid Friendly Healthy Snack Ideas
String Cheese – high in protein – my daughter can eats these 3X’s / day
Organic Peanut butter – less sugar, high in protein, my kids love to eat this off a spoon
Organic Almond butter – less sugar, tastes similar to peanut butter
Whole Wheat Pretzels – dip in peanut butter or almond butter
Organic Greek Yogurt – I hate the normal taste of yogurt. I finally found a great brand that doesn’t have any high fructose corn syrup and tastes great.
Turkey Rolls w/Muenster Cheese
Organic Applesauce
It was really neat to see my kids put back non-healthy foods on the shelves while we were shopping at the grocery store. This is helping to develop great habits for them as well as they get older and have their own families. This is a great way to fight the child obesity problems that are so prevalent today by helping our children with proper nutrition ideas as early as possible. These are just a few of the items that we bought over the weekend. Please feel free to comment on any healthy snack ideas that your children love as well.

Lap Band Surgery – Next Exit
June 10, 2009 by nctrower
Filed under Jumpstart Your Metabolism, Lap Band Surgery
Geesh! I see huge billboards everywhere I go here in Los Angeles for Lap Band Surgery! “If you need to lose 50 or more pounds, then lap band surgery is for you”. Unbelievable! I counted 11 lap band billboards on my way to a family reunion last weekend. I need to get my own billboard and post “QuickMomWorkouts.com will do the job without the cost and pain of surgery!”
I have seen more women lose 50+ pounds just with nutrition changes and working out for 15 minutes a day. I do plan to buy a few summer t-shirts with this on the front and the back.
Now let me share with you why you don’t need lap band surgery.
Top 8 Reasons Why You Don’t Need Lap Band Surgery
1. Many post operation complications – potential infections and excessive bleeding
2. Slippage of the band can cause heart burn and vomitting
3. The band can erode into the inside of your stomach
4. The band can spontaneously deflate because of leakage
5. The surgery is costly between $17,000 to $30,000
6. Additional surgery may be needed
7. More fiber is the answer to feeling more full, not surgery
8. A surgery will not change your habits for a lifetime
What Is a Lap-Band?
“Lap-Band System” is the brand name of the FDA-approved, adjustable gastric band used in the procedure. Most simply, a Lap-Band is a silicone belt that goes around the top of the stomach. This results in the ability to control your hunger and achieve a “feeling of fullness,” or satiety. Ultimately, you eat much less and should feel full sooner.
It is obvious that the end results of the lap band surgery (satiety) means lack of nutrition awareness. Fiber is definitely one of the key components to correct this problem as well as eating supportive healthy meals every 3-4 hours. The answer is not surgery which can lead to so many other problems but changing your lifestyle and learning nutrition and an exercise regimen for effective fat loss. Is this new surge of billboards only in Los Angeles? Or are other cities seeing more of these billboards as well?

My Summer Fitness Challenge Week 6 of 12
June 8, 2009 by nctrower
Filed under Fitness Challenge, Jumpstart Your Metabolism
Wow! It is hard to believe that I am half way through my 2nd fitness challenge of the year. I hate to report that I have encountered my 1st injury in my life. I have been an athlete since 5 years old and I haven’t had any injuries until now. I didn’t even sustain this injury while working out or playing a sport. However, I blame it on OLD AGE!
I had a sharp pain in my chest after I reached in a diagonal direction for a pen. Is that ridiculous or what? The injury occurred 1 day before my 30-*something* birthday and I blame it on early preparation for my 40’s. Sure, I wish I could blame it on my super buff workouts, but honestly if a weight is too heavy for me, I quickly put it down and use what is just right to feel a burn without over-exerting myself.
Here is my official diagnosis:
_____________________________________________________________________________________
Costochondritis is an inflammation of the cartilage that connects a rib to the breastbone (sternum). It causes sharp pain in the costosternal joint – where your ribs and breastbone are joined by rubbery cartilage. Pain caused by costochondritis may mimic that of a heart attack or other heart conditions.
Your doctor might refer to costochondritis by other names, including chest wall pain, costosternal syndrome and costosternal chondrodynia. When the pain of costochondritis is accompanied by swelling, it’s referred to as Tietze syndrome.
Most cases of costochondritis have no apparent cause. In these cases, treatment focuses on easing your pain while you wait for costochondritis to resolve on its own.

_____________________________________________________________________________________
The crazy thing is that I’ve talked to about 5 different people that have been diagnosed with this and there are different recovery time frames. My doctor said 2-3 weeks but most of my friends said 6 months and/or 18 months! Most of them said the anti-inflammatory meds didn’t work for them.
I did home physical therapy that included taking deep breaths with my mouth closed and breathing through my nose. This helps to heal the area. Another exercise that helps to ease the pain is to clasp your hands together behind your back and lift your arms up and down. These exercises along with the anti-inflammatory meds helped me to get back on track after about 2 weeks.
Thankfully those meds are helping me and I don’t feel that much pain. I took 1 week off from my workouts which was hard to do since I have been making so much progress. I was bummed that my chest hurt a bit after doing a light workout. Doesn’t my rib area know that I’m in a fitness challenge? Ha!
Oh well. I will listen to my body and see where these next 6 weeks take me. At least I don’t feel myself filling out my jeans which is always my 1st indicator to weight gain. I haven’t stepped on a scale in 6 weeks! I will probably do a weigh in this Friday just to see where I stand. These are just the ups and downs of life and I have to learn to adjust to obstacles. I feel a quote is appropriate to end this post.
“Life’s up and downs provide windows of opportunity to determine your values and goals – Think of using all obstacles as stepping stones to build the life you want” Marsha Sinetar

Does Green Tea Really Help With Weight Loss?
Green Tea is a hot topic in the weight loss market. So do the bottled green teas really provide any weight loss benefits? I am sure there are a lot of people drinking Green Tea but maybe not in a way that is generating weight loss. Here are some Green Tea benefits:
Article in Quotes from my fitness trainer, Holly Rigsby
“Green Tea Benefits
Studies have shown that antioxidants in green tea help with weight loss, cholesterol, cardiovascular diseases, stress, slowing the aging process and boosting your immune system.
Green tea contains antioxidations, polyphenols, theanine, as well as a wide variety of vitamins and minerals.
Polyphenols–Polyphenols are a class of phytochemicals that have been associated with heart disease and cancer prevention.
Catechins–Catechins are a category of polyphenols. In green tea, catechins are present in significant quantities, more specifically; epicatechin(EC), epigallocatechin(EGC), epicatechin gallate(ECG) and epigallocatechin gallate(EGCG). EGCG makes up about 10-50% of the total catechin content and appears to be the most powerful of the catechins.
With antioxidant activity about 25-100 times more potent then vitamins C and E. A cup of green tea may provide 10-40mg of polyphenols and has antioxidant activity greater then a serving of broccoli, spinach, carrots or strawberries.
However, ***Most Pre-Made Bottled Green Tea is just another type of soft drink****
For example, take a look at the ingredients in Regular Lipton Iced Green Tea
“Water, high fructose corn syrup, citric acid, green tea, sodium hexametaphosphate, ascorbic acid, honey, natural flavors, phosphoric acid, sodium benzoate, potassium sorbate, calcium disodium edta, caramel color, tallow 5, blue1.”
With 200 calories, 13 teaspoons of added sugar and a long list of artificial ingredients…you know this is not so good and if you compare the two – they really are not much different that drinking a bottle of coke or pepsi!
Check out the ingredients of the green tea you that you brew yourself….
Green Tea: Green tea.
Raspberry Gardens: Green tea, hibiscus, blackberry leaves, natural raspberry flavor with other natural flavors (contains soy lecithin), roasted chicory and raspberries.
Pretty obvious – the closer something is to all natural – the better it is for your body and your fat loss efforts.
Now I am a sucker for SWEET Teas and I just can’t acquire a taste for teas with no sugar. That is like trying to acquire a taste for beer. I just can’t do it!
However, here are a few green tea tips to sweeten the weight loss efforts even more.
1. Only brew your green tea for 1-2 minutes for a less bitter taste.
2. Brew a flavored green tea (I love peppermint tea so this is a great one)
3. Mix a different flavored tea like Country Peach Passion herbal tea for example
4. Add fresh lemon or orange to your green tea“
Here is a selection of more natural bottled green teas: Be sure to check out the nutritional information for each of them.
Let me know if you would like to try any of these bottled green teas or even the brewed versions of these teas. I will send them to you free of charge! Happy Green Tea Drinking!
