What is a Fun Snack Full of Protein & Fiber?

July 18, 2009 by nctrower

Dry Roasted Edamame is a fun snack that is full of protein and fiber. It is really shocking that there is more protein in 1 serving than almonds. There are 14 g of protein and 8 g of fiber in 1 serving! This a great snack when you have the munchies and candy and chips just won’t do anymore. There is a large size at Costco that can allow you to have a stash at all times.

edamame What is a Fun Snack Full of Protein & Fiber?

They are great for packing an “on the go” snack for those busy moms and dads that are running from one kid event to the next. Sound familiar? I constantly have to think ahead and prepare to have a healthy snack with me in order to make sure that I eat every 3-4 hours which is a great contributor to boosting your metabolism.

It’s amazing that the fiber helps me to feel full so much faster and I don’t crave any non-supportive meals. Make sure that you fill up on protein and fiber today!

High Protein Apple Cinnamon Pancakes

July 17, 2009 by nctrower

apple cinnamon pancakes 200x300 High Protein Apple Cinnamon Pancakes

High Protein Apple Cinnamon Pancakes

¾ cup Quaker quick Oats or instant oats
4 egg whites
½ cup apple, diced
1 scoop of Protein Powder
1 tsp. Of cinnamon

Directions

1.) Put all ingredients together in a mixing bowl. Stir until the mixture has a semi-liquid pancake-batter-like consistency.

2.) Spray some non-stick spray on a frying pan and pour the mixture into the pan.

3.) Cook on medium heat. When one side is lightly browned and solid enough to flip, turn the pancake over with a spatula and cook the other side until lightly browned and firm.

Notes: For higher protein diets, add one scoop of vanilla protein powder (”Designer Protein” brand “vanilla praline” adds a nice flavor too). Wrap up your pancake in foil and take it to go, put it in the fridge for later use, or eat it hot! Oatmeal pancakes will stay fresh all day long without refrigeration.

How to Workout with Your Kids at Home

My kiddos (aged 4 and 7) watched this video from my fitness trainer, Holly Rigsby, with me and were just tickled pink. Although they already workout right beside me, this video gave us some more great ideas! :) They can’t wait until my next workout.

Now they are my accountability buggers..Mom when are you going to workout? hee! hee! For those that are overwhelmed with more than 1 child, it works out for us to take turns with each child or have an older child work on the next step of the workout.

This video below shows some great examples of how to have fun with your kids and still get a workout in for you. Beach Body Shakeology Review

July 7, 2009 by nctrower

What is all of the fuss about Beach Body Shakeology? Wow, 70 healthy ingredients in 1 glass..gotta have a strange taste, right? Well I’m here to tell you that it is true. It does taste a bit strange! :) It’s all of the green ingredients that make you feel like you are drinking a bunch of herbs.

shakeology Beach Body Shakeology Review

My good friend, Coach Jenn from Personal Fit Coach directed me to her site with the goods. I actually had a great friend from Twitter, Michelle Olander, send me a huge sample of shakeology. As you know, I am not a chocolate fan so Michelle sent over the greenberry flavor. Jenn gave me some great suggestions:

“I love to blend it with OJ and fresh berries. I often throw in some strawberry yogurt too. What is nice is that the base shake mix is only 140 so adding another 100-150 cals is no biggie for a meal replacement.”

I tried Shakeologoy with OJ and it tastes much better than water but I had to add a little water in addition to the OJ to get it to my liking. I also tried it with Almond Milk and let’s just say that I prefer the OJ version. I haven’t added yogurt or fruit yet but the “herb” taste is a little hard to swallow.

I’m just going to have to make use of the shakeology recipe section to make sure I use up all of my sample.

Here is the Greenberry Shakeology Nutritional Information and the Chocolate Shakeology Nutritional Information.

The main downside to the Shakeology product is that is there is no trial size option. There is only 1 option to buy a 30 day supply for $119.95. I want to know that I like a product before waiting for a full refund.

I don’t know if it’s all of the natural ingredients hitting me all at once but I tend to get a headache right after drinking each shake. I am one that hardly ever gets headaches so I found that to be pretty strange. Have you tried Beach Body Shakeology yet? What are your thoughts?

Prograde Workout / Lean Meal Replacement Shake Review

progradelogo Prograde Workout / Lean Meal Replacement Shake Review

There are a few Prograde products that I enjoy. My absolute favorite is Prograde Workout Shake. It has a great taste especially with Almond Milk. It tastes disgusting to me with water, so Almond Milk is a great alternative. Almond milk is only 60 calories per serving to add to the 200 calories of the Prograde Vanilla Recovery Shake. This is the second article of three in a series of product reviews of Nutrilite, Prograde and Shakeology Products.

I would love the Prograde Lean Meal Replacement more if there was a vanilla option. Chocolate is the only option for the Prograde Meal Replacement Shake. Yes, what a shocker that I don’t care for chocolate! I am a sucker for all things vanilla and caramel. ;)

Prograde Cravers are great ORGANIC snack bars. They’re not protein bars per se, but rather “snack bars” containing 100% organic and nutrient-packed ingredients to satisfy not only your hunger and taste buds, but also your body’s nutritional needs.

cravers almond1 Prograde Workout / Lean Meal Replacement Shake Review

They’re only 180 calories so they’re perfect for a quick on-the-go snack in the mid-morning or mid-afternoon to satisfy your appetite and keep your blood sugar stable until your next meal… a nice convenient snack to bring with you to work every day, or on a road trip, and help you avoid the junk-food snacks that are everywhere you look.

Cravers are also full of healthy fats from all-natural ingredients. Plus they’re coated with a delicious 100% organic antioxidant-rich dark chocolate coating.  Of course, I’m waiting for the white chocolate version. There are 3 different chocolate flavors: Almond Butter, Peanut Butter and Spirulina.

Let me know if you would like to try any of these products FREE!

California Fighting the War on Obesity

restaurant law California Fighting the War on Obesity

California becomes the first state in the nation to pass a new law aimed at reducing obesity and heart disease. Starting today, July 1st, 2009 restaurants with at least 20 locations have to reveal the number of calories in most of the food on their menus.

These restaurants can either list the calories in their standard items on menus and indoor menu boards or they can offer customers brochures listing the amount of calories, saturated fat, salt and carbohydrates in those items.

Starting in 2011, the calorie counts in standard menu items — food and drinks the restaurants sell at least half the year — will have to be listed on menus and indoor menu boards. Drive-through customers will have to be offered brochures providing nutritional information.

Of course many of the fast food chains resisted this change. Well why not? If people really knew what they were eating, they MIGHT reconsider their food choices. However, there are so many people that could care less so it probably wouldn’t affect their bottom line anyway. Can you imagine anyone asking you at the drive thru window, “Would you like 620 calories and 32 grams of fat with that?”

It’s a great start to educate more people on nutrition, although we have a long way to go to before we will see results. It’s neat to see California leading in something more positive than the typical highest rates of foreclosure states.

I ran across this great article from the Mother Nature Network Top 10 Organic Fast Food Restaurants and I thought I’d share it here. Many of these restaurants aren’t even here in my local area in southern California. Even if they were, I would still scrutinize the calorie counts and ingredients list. There are so many artificial trans fats that I would like to avoid among other things.

So what do you think? Do you think people will be more conscious of their food intake as result of this new law?
