Acai Berry, Another Fad Diet?

acai Acai Berry, Another Fad Diet?

acai Acai Berry, Another Fad Diet?

You will find many sites on the internet claiming significant weight loss in just a few days with the Acai Berry diet. There are many anti-oxidant related benefits with the acai berry and it’s being stretched a bit to include rapid weight loss. Many of the before and after pictures are taken from sites where the loss was generated from months of a well balanced nutritional food plan and exercise.

Here is a great teleseminar that gives the truth about the acai berry fad that is dominating the internet at this moment

The Real Truth about the Acai Berry Fad

The Myths of Fad Diets

1. Diets that promise quick and easy weight loss are usually based on eating more of one food type and none of another. These do not give the benefits that you would get from a balanced diet. They may suggest you take supplements but many supplements are not absorbed by the body unless they are taken along with the foods that the diet has banned. After a few weeks, if you stick to it that long, you may begin to develop nutritional deficiencies.

2. Fad diets are often boring and over restrictive. After the novelty of the first day or two, you will not enjoy your meals. You will then start to crave food constantly and will break the diet. You may even feel guilty, thinking it is your fault that you did not lose weight.

3. Most fad diets do not follow recommendations of the American Heart Association and similar bodies for fat levels in the diet. Often the diet will recommend high fat foods and low carbs which if taken long term, could result in heart disease. The promoters may tell you that the diet is only intended to be followed for a short time. But you probably will not reach your goal weight in that time, and then what? You either continue with a plan that is not good for your health, or stop and probably gain back what you lost.

4. Many fad diets do not help you to incorporate enough servings of fruits and vegetables in your weight loss program, or give you the variety of foods that your body needs.

5. Quick weight loss diets are just a temporary solution and do not help you to make permanent changes to your eating habits. Permanent changes are the only way to remain at your target weight once you reach it. Fad diets encourage yo-yo diet-binge cycles of fast weight loss and equally fast weight gain. This is worse for your health and your self esteem than if you had stayed overweight all the time.

Whatever the publicity materials may say, these diets will not help you in the long term. The best way to sustain weight loss is to eat a varied and healthy diet, do not overeat, exercise regularly and avoid fad diets.

Healthy Tips for Eating Out

November 28, 2008 by nctrower

I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving! I had an adventure as always in my household. My mother-in-law who lives with us had some chest pains and my husband called the paramedics. Unfortunately she spent Thanksgiving day in the hospital. We had plans for dinner at my mom’s house so after visiting my mil in the hospital, we headed out for our feast.

My brothers and their kids were there. We called our youngest sister on the phone as she is stationed at her new army base in Virginia. She just finished her boot camp and specialized training. We were all thankful to spend time together.

I did pretty well on my eating with the focus on my fat loss. I ate this lemon cake that was DIVINE! I had 2 small pieces. I also had a small sliver of sweet potatoe pie. YUM! I forgot to weigh in this past Wednesday so I’ll have to do that soon. I may just wait until next Wednesday.

I’ve been reading some articles on healthy eating and weight loss and ran across some great info for eating out on Fit Yummy Mummy.  Here are some things that I’ve already started to implement:

Healthy Tips for Eating Out

1. Eat a small snack before so you won’t overeat

2. Avoid the bread basket

3. Choose thinner, balsamic like salad dressings – ranch is very fattening

4. Order an appetizer and a salad as your meal

5. Don’t eat dessert after dinner – save it for later. You gain the most weight by eating too much in one sitting

6. Avoid breaded or fried food

7. Avoid dishes that come with rice or pasta since it’s usually HUGE portions

Top 10 Foods to Avoid

November 12, 2008 by nctrower

Here are top 10 foods to avoid that I normally don’t really pay that much attention to. I’ve been more careful to avoid these foods lately.

1. Pizza

2. French Fries

3. Potato Chips (even Low cal)

4. Anything Fried or Breaded

5. Sweet Breakfast Cereals

6. Regular Sodas

7. Cake and Desserts (even fat free)

8. Chocolate (even fat free)

9. Overeating TOO much Bread (but having a small sandwich is okay)

10. Ranch Style Salad Dressings (choose thinner balsamic dressings instead)

Bonus: Rice and Pasta

Which ones are your biggest downfall? I’m a big ice cream eater which isn’t on this list so I guess that means that I can get away with it, right? LOL I’ve been known to smother ranch on my salads although I prefer balsamic vinegrettes so that is an easy change for me. My other guilty pleasures are french fries and sweet breakfast cereals.  Although this past week wasn’t a great work out week for me, I know that avoiding these foods has helped to maintain my weight this week.

6 Meals A Day

November 6, 2008 by nctrower

The most favorable and welcome fat loss tip is to actually eat more than the regular three meals a day. You might be skeptical about this but if you ask your nutritionist or dietician about it, they will agree that spacing meals into 6 separate times per day is a great tool to use in weight loss management. It is important to note here that, the 6 times a day plan should be under the supervision of a nutritionist or dietician. The experts can help maximize the potential for your weight loss program, while making sure that you go through the said program safely (or at least, without putting your overall health at risk.)

According to the experts, 6 small meals a day are better at satisfying our hunger pangs than the standard 3 large meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner.) With the 3 meals per day, we tend to sneak in a few bars of chocolate or a few slices of pizza to help get us through the next meal. And in such cases, even with a hefty meal, we still find ourselves raiding the fridge for leftover meals. When planned right, the 6 small meals plan will completely eliminate the need for high calorie snacks.

Of course, along with this fat loss tip is to eat more healthy food. Not because your nutritionist or dietician gives you license to eat 6 times a day meals means that you actually order and consume a box of fully loaded pizza each and every time. Eating small meals does not also mean you have to eat just a cube of cheese every time you feel like you are about to faint. The key to getting this fat loss tip right is to increase your meal supply of fresh veggies and fruits.

Another fat loss tip is to start counting the calories for all the beverages you consume. Incredibly, people almost always never count the calories for these. They often reserve calorie counting to food only, which is a big no-no. Sugary cola and even bottled tea have enough sugar in them to make you feel hungry; which in turn will make you want to eat more, and eventually veer away from your food plan. A great drink in addition to water that I’ve added to my food plan is Fuze. There is a collection of low calorie drinks. Make sure to check The Slenderize drinks because they do have drinks that aren’t low in calories. I’ve found the best price at Food 4 Less at 10 bottles for $10.

Kid Drama Prevents Exercise

My son, Jayden had a traumatic experience at school and he just can’t let it go. At first one of his teachers said that he saw a violent event, but then he told me that he didn’t see it. His friend saw it and told him the gory details and now he’s scared out of his mind.  A car drove by their school and some kids saw someone brutually punch a kid continually in the car. My son’s friend of course exaggerated the story and said that someone did that to his sister and she was killed. Jayden freaked out and started to cry uncontrollably. His friend’s sister is alive and well and I have to keep reminding Jayden that his story was a lie.

Here were my efforts to work out yesterday:

“Mom, is that man going to find me and beat me?”

“No, Jayden he doesn’t even know you.”

“Mom, is he going to shoot me?”

“No, Jayden come on let’s read some reassuring scriptures about God to calm your nerves.”

“Mom, I’m going to make sure that I always stay close to you because I don’t want to die and you stay here. I don’t want you to die either and I stay here.”  *heartbreak moment*

He had about 8 other questions so we settled down in the bed and read some reassuring words from God. I prayed silently, “Please help me God, I don’t know how to calm his nerves.” Finally, I hugged him, rubbed his head and whispered, “Everything is going to be Ok.” He fell asleep 2 minutes later. Thank goodness the main thing he needed was a hug to calm him down.

So since my workout was interrupted yesterday, I decided to write down my food plan for weight loss for today. I am on day 5 of 11 of a fat loss food plan.  I can’t wait for day 9, 10, 11 where I can eat anything in reasonable portions but days 1-8 aren’t so bad either since I’m choosing certain fat loss food that I love anyway.

Meal #1

Hard Boiled Eggs

Meal #2

Roast Beef Slices

Meal #3

Garden Salad w/Strawberries

Meal #4

Turkey Slices

The cool thing is that I don’t have to weigh my food. I just eat until right before I feel full. I also make sure to drink 10 glasses of water per day. It’s mid-day and I’m on 5 glasses of water so far.

I have already had a 1.5 mile power walk and I hope that I can have my 45 min cardio workout later today. Let’s hope that I can hug my son again today and lose some pounds.
